After Noah has become well-known over the past quarter of a century for restoring
and selling vintage and collectable furniture, to complement its contemporary range. Some of its most stylish and popular have always been original pieces of vintage G Plan furniture, so we were delighted and proud to have been chosen by G Plan to stock its new retro-revival range "G Plan Vintage".
G Plan was one of England's most iconic furniture makers of the latter half of the twentieth century, pioneering a range of furniture in the United Kingdom which was produced by E Gomme Ltd of High Wycombe.  Gomme was the 'G' in G Plan.
G Plan Vintage The Fifty NineAs a result of years of rationing, the British government set up a scheme known as Utility.  This scheme was designed to rein-in the costs and types of furniture that were permitted to be manufactured and sold.  A limited number of simple designs were made available to factories, which produced them mostly in oak (and sometimes, mahogany) veneered plywood. By the time the scheme ended in December 1952 and combined with the Festival of Britain there was a huge and unsatisfied demand for more modern furniture.
In 1953, Donald Gomme, the founder and main designer at E Gomme, set about producing an holistic and full range of contemporary furniture for the whole house, but which could be purchased piece-meal dependent on household purse-strings.  The G Plan name was born as a result of the advertising agency that Gomme employed from the beginning, knowing that part of his strategy had to be to appeal to and reach a mass-market. Rather than simply selling the range through stockists, G Plan furniture was advertised in home and style magazines and in cinemas direct to the public. They used other forms of direct marketing too, by setting up showrooms where the public could actually see, touch and sit on the G Plan range; these were located throughout the country and the "G Plan Gallery' was established in Vogue House, St George Street, Hanover Square in London.  The designs were made available for a number of years at a stretch so that people could collect them slowly, over time, dependent on budget. G Plan ensured that all the furniture they produced was marked with the distinctive brand logo.
The G-Plan range was so successful, that it led to E Gomme Ltd becoming one of the UK's largest furniture manufacturers, with profits increasing exponentially between 1952 when it was first brought to market and 1958 when the company was floated on the London Stock Exchange.
Donald Gomme left the company in 1958, probably at the right time, at the peak of the company's success. In the 60s in direct response to competition from the Danish furniture industry, the company introduced the Danish Modern range, which they commissioned to be designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and which made the rest of the range seem dated.

TIMELESS CLASSICS BECOME THE ICONS OF THE FUTURE
G Plan Vintage The Fifty Eight
In 2013, in collaboration with Wayne Hemingway of Hemingway Design, G Plan created "G Plan Vintage", a striking range of furniture inspired by the classic sofas and chairs that they had once produced in the 50s and 60s. This key collection still embraces the values, quality and craftsmanship of the original G Plan range, but uses Hemingway’s design aesthetic to do so with a fresh new and vibrant twist on vintage products. G Plan Vintage The Sixty Two
All hand-made from top quality timber, fabric and hide - all of the G Plan Vintage range is produced right here in the UK - in Melksham, Wiltshire. Each design in the range is named after the mid-twentieth century original from which it was originally inspired. Somehow, they have managed to create designs with a timeless quality, whilst harking back to a period that has a great deal of currency with the manner of living in the twenty first century - sitting very well in modern homes and apartments. They bring together sleek and handsome lines and classic, muted colours, in a range of furniture that is certain to stand the test of time, both from a design and construction perspective. And best of all, because it's all made here in England, the lead times are reliably shorter than many other manufacturers and mean that you will generally be sitting on the sofa you ordered within 6 weeks.
Using a 21-stage design and manufacturing process, the G Plan Vintage craftsmen and women are highly skilled and combine the finest materials for maximum durability and comfort - ensuring that every piece from the G Plan Vintage range is built to last.  G Plan understand that buying a sofa should be an investment and not a trivial, throwaway decision and that's why every piece of G Plan Vintage furniture comes with a 10-year frame and spring guarantee - which means you have the peace of mind to simply, kick off your shoes, sit back and relax.
