The classic 1930s design which originated from Ericsson in Sweden had the nickname of the “cheese tray telephone” owing to the apparent similarity.
The concept of a one piece plastic moulding which could accommodate dial, bell and major electrical components was a breakthrough in its time. Developed by L.M. Ericsson the design was a collaboration between engineer Johann Christian Bjerknes (of Oslo's Elektrisk Bureau) for the internal mechanics and artist and sculptor Jean Heiberg (1884-1976)who designed the body. Jean Heiberg was a notable Norwegian artist who had studied under Matisse.
The design was so successful that it was copied and used around the world.
The British 332 version (1936-1960's) was manufactured for the GPO under license by Siemens, Ericsson and General Electric. The Post Office approved the design as its standard issue after testing 200 green phones in various Government departments around Whitehall. The body, was the Swedish original the handset however was retained from the earlier British 200 series (part number 164) and is reputed to be the single longest running unaltered industrial manufactured product in the world.
Available predominantly in black, we occassionally have ivory, red or green models available. Highly sought and ever more difficult to find, these colours command an ever increasing price. Additionally and even less commonly, we have a wall version.
