This really is a beautiful, simple and elegant Victorian golden oak twin pedestal desk made around 1860 - and is particularly unusual for having a lidded top. We bought it from an elderly couple in the Nottinghamshire area who had inherited it from a vicarage. This desk is perfect for storing drawings or artwork neatly under the lid, as the whole top rises to reveal a large flat storage area, supported by a brass hinge-stay.Or you could just appear to be very tidy by hiding your laptop and various other bits and bobs neatly underneath when friends and family visit.
The top also boasts a very smart leather writing insert of an oxblood colour (almost black, but worn through in areas) with blind embossed tooling. The drawers are all oak lined and hand-dovetailed in a rather accomplished way. Some of the knobs are a little damaged (the worst is pictured below), but it doesn't spoil the overall effect and we don't have keys for the locks that remain (some are missing altogether). The oak planks making up both sides have opened slightly (one pictured). There's a photograph of the inside of one of the drawers - many of which have remnants of ink spillages - worst pictured. There's also historically been some movement on one of the drawer rails, which we've stabilised - causing minor damage - also photographed.
The pedestals are raised on a removable plinth (it would need unscrewing), but might be a help if delivery was tight, although the desk is of quite neat proportions. The back is of roughly stained pine and looks to be original.
In all, this desk is in a rather nicely used condition, with the usual signs of age which one might expect of a desk which is more than 150 years old.
